Recognitions highlight city school board meeting

CULLMAN – The Cullman City School Board’s meeting for September took place Tuesday evening in the central office boardroom.

Recognitions were the highlight of the meeting with Premier Bank awarding Technology Innovation Grants to four area teachers. Recipients were Savannah Wood of East Elementary School for $1,000, Jennifer Crumpton of West Elementary for $500, Patti Britton of East Elementary and Elizabeth Pylant of Cullman High School for $250.

Board member Suzanne Harbin was recognized for reaching Master status for the second year from the Alabama Association of School Boards (AASB) academy, while Brenda Howell achieved Level 4 status from the AASB.

In new business, the board granted several permissions:

  • Permission to contract with Xerox Corporation to provide 10 copy machines and services at Cullman High School for a 60-month period.
  • Permission to contract with NFHS School Broadcast Network to host open broadcast system at Cullman High School. This is to be funded by sponsorship advertising.
  • Permission to contract with North Metro Basketball Officials Association for basketball officiating at Cullman High School during the 2016-17 season.
  • Permission to contract with Goodwin, Mills and Cawood Architects for development of preliminary drawings for buildings and facilities.
  • Permission to accept the agreement with Goodheart-Wilcox Publisher for the purchase of "Principles of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, 2017” for agribusiness classes at Cullman High School.
  • Permission to accept the agreement with McGraw Hill Education for the purchase of "Applying Life Skills, 2016" for teen connection classes at Cullman Middle School.
  • Permission for Cullman Middle School to adopt the student book, "Applying Life Skills, 2016" as well as teacher's edition and supplemental materials for teen connection classes.
  • Permission to contract with Patrick Bates to provide database support, network services and consultation beginning Oct. 1, 2016 through Sept. 30, 2017.
  • Permission to contract with Susan Evans to provide special education evaluations beginning Aug. 17, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2017.
  • Permission to contract with Deborah Wright to provide special education evaluations from Aug.2, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2017.
  • Permission to contract with Sue Melvin to provide homebound instruction beginning Sept.16, 2016 to Sept. 30, 2017.

Cullman City Head Start Policy Council by-laws were approved, as was a corrected Cullman City Child Development Center SF424 for 2016-17 grant application.

There was a proposed approval of maintenance level II and III salary schedules to include three additional steps. This item will be sent out to policy review committee for review and brought back for consideration.

Superintendent Dr. Susan Patterson addressed the crowd, saying that she and Harbin recently met with the new Alabama Superintendent of Education, Michael Sentance. She shared that the new superintendent voiced concern on several issues while speaking with the local representatives.

Patterson also reported that strides are being made for a progress report to come out in the month of December.

The next regular meeting of the Cullman City School Board will be Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. in the central office boardroom. The public is invited to attend.
