CULLMAN, Ala. – A retirement reception for former CEO of Cullman Power Board Mike Manning, was held at All Steak restaurant in Cullman Friday evening on Oct. 29. The reception hosted several out-of-town visitors as well as members of the Tennessee Valley Authority and Cullman Utilities Board. Congressman Robert Aderholt made an appearance and congratulated Manning. Utility Board Chairman Wayne Fuller and Cullman Mayor Woody Jacobs each gave speeches during Manning’s reception.

Fuller said of Manning, “He’s always seemed to meet the criteria of the Rotary clubs famous Four Way Test of things we think say and do: that would be, ‘It is the truth,’ ‘Is it fair to all concerned,’ ‘Will it build goodwill and better friendships’ and ‘Is it beneficial to all concerned.’ This is how Mike has operated during his career and has earned the respect of his many colleagues across the regions.”

Mayor Jacobs presented Manning with a plaque that the mayor felt “wasn’t enough to recognize 42 years of service.”

Manning joined the Power Board in 1979. He served as CFO and as assistant general manager before being named general manager in 1996.

Mike Manning expressed excitement for Allison Bright as the successor to his position as CEO. Manning said the board thoroughly investigated all the highly qualified candidates and picked Bright as the right fit. She was up against several candidates, some from out of state. Manning was not involved in the selection process, but he said, “I provided some information and encouraged them to make a good decision and they did…She has some really good experience with Alabama Power, and I think she’ll be a great benefit for Cullman.”

Manning is ready to join his wife in retirement to spend more time with his grandchildren. He will be working part-time at the CPB for a short time during Allison Bright’s transition.

Some of his many accomplishments include:

  • Serving as chairman of Electric Cities of Alabama,
  • Chairman and board member for six years at the Tennessee Valley Public Power Association,
  • Past director and founding board member of the Seven States Power Corporation,
  • Board member of Central Service Association (served as Vice President and President) for 28 years,
  • NAPPA director and former secretary-treasurer; and
  • Director and former chairman of the North Alabama Industrial Development Association.
