The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Hazardous Weather Outlook for north Alabama and portions of southern middle Tennessee.

Today and Tonight

Tropical Storm Harvey is forecast to move across the southern Mississippi River Valley today and tonight. Moisture associated with and preceding this system will bring scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms to the Tennessee Valley, especially this afternoon and evening. Locally heavy rain, gusty winds, and frequent lightning could accompany the stronger storms.

Thursday through Tuesday

During Thursday, Tropical Depression Harvey will continue moving to the northeast, reaching northern Mississippi Thursday evening. A moist and unstable air mass around this system, along with moderate to strong lower level wind shear, will be favorable for the development of additional thunderstorms. Some of the storms on Thursday could become strong to severe in intensity, with damaging wind gusts and weak tornado development possible. Portions of northwest Alabama, especially if daytime heating occurs, will be more susceptible for strong and severe thunderstorms. A threat of strong thunderstorms will diminish late Thursday night into Friday morning, as the tropical system exits to the north and east of the region. Torrential rains are also possible within this tropical air mass. Locally heavy downpours could produce ponding of water and flooding, mainly in prone areas.

Shower and thunderstorm activity should end Saturday night, as drier air filters in from the northwest.
