CULLMAN – Little Nesmith Park was active Friday night and part of Saturday for the Dizzy Dean 6-Under District V baseball tournament.

The coach-pitch tournament featured two local teams, Cullman Red and Cullman Black, plus one club from Oneonta.

Cullman Red went undefeated through the two-day event, defeating Cullman Black twice.

On Friday, the Red won a 19-11 slugfest that sent them to the winner's final.

Cullman Black started the tournament with a 16-15 thriller over Oneonta, before being sent to the loser's bracket by Cullman Red.

In the elimination round Saturday morning, the Black rolled over Oneonta 14-2, setting up a hotly contested rematch with the Red squad.

Cullman Red never trailed, but the game was close for the six innings the rivals battled under humid conditions at Little Nesmith.

The Red got out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first as the Black narrowed the deficit following their first time to bat in the bottom of the inning.

Both teams showed good defense during the second with neither allowing a run to score.

The offenses came back to life for the rest of the way. In the Cullman Red third, they produced five runs including a three-run inside the park homer that sent them up by a score of 9-3.

Cullman Black tallied a pair of runs in their side of the third, staying in contention, down 9-5.

A seven-run fourth inning, the maximum for runs scored by one team per inning, enabled Cullman Red to take a 16-5 advantage into the bottom of the fourth.

Back came Cullman Black, scoring five runs and trailing 16-10 as the game went to the fifth.

A three-run inning by Cullman Red was matched by Cullman Black scoring three as well. The contest went to the final inning with the Red holding a 19-13 advantage.

Cullman Black had to allow only one to have a chance at batting in the bottom of the sixth. But Cullman Red loaded the bases and got a single with one out, scoring two runs that ended the game via an advantage of eight runs.

The Cullman Red roster consisted of Isaac Glass, Sutton Meyer, Tucker Mauter, Michael Shadeck, Chandler Hyatt, Colton Hicks, Braxton Jones, Carter Robertson, Mason Gobble, Cooper Robertson, Braylen Manns, Thatcher Lucas, John Mark Stephens and Luke Phillips.

For the Cullman Black, their lineup featured Kyston Grobe, Jonah Taylor, Beckett Jackson, Fisher Lawrence, Noah Phillips, John Luke Witcher, Jack Armstrong, Isaac Phillips, Landon Moss, Dylan Moore and Sawyer Perry.

All three teams will take part in the Dizzy Dean Area Tournament that will begin June 23 with location to be announced.
