HANCEVILLE – Youngsters participating in this summer’s Camp Wallace had fun learning how to paint, how to take photographs, how to set a table, how to entertain a crowd a more.

Hosted by the Wallace State Community College Continuing Education program, Camp Wallace offered half-day camps for students entering kindergarten through seventh grade. The students were able to choose four classes that fit their interests. Art and music classes proved to be very popular among those attending Camp Wallace.

On Monday, students entering kindergarten through second grade started the morning off with the choices of Party Like a Princess or Totally Terrific Tales. Those choosing the Party Like a Princess option were each gifted with a pink feather boa and a tiara to wear while they crafted pink picture frames and learned how to properly set a table and about proper etiquette.

The remainder of the day included classes about music, cooking, art, agriculture and safety. Wallace State music instructor Sara Markham introduced the students to a number of instruments and led them in a song about animals, letting the students make the sounds of stomping elephants and slithering snakes using the instruments.

On Tuesday, students entering grades 3 through 7 were divided into two groups and offered the opportunity to learn all sorts of lessons. Anthony Hilliard, director of Wallace State’s agriculture/horticulture production program, showed the students different ways to root plants from leaves. WSCC Emergency Medical Services instructors Allen Patterson and Kristi Graham taught the Jr. Medics classes each day. Theresa Burns provided lessons on digital photography and the students whipped up a simple recipe in cooking classes, taking home their finished product.

Several Wallace State students in the theater department taught the group a dance routine during the “Girls and Guys on Broadway” segment. Students in the WSCC Child Development program helped the youngsters in their classes throughout each day of camp.

“Everyone had a wonderful time,” said Melinda Edwards, dean of institutional outreach at Wallace State. “The children were wonderful and seemed to enjoy every minute of the day. I want to say a special thanks to all of the faculty, staff and especially the students who volunteered their time to help out.”
