CULLMAN – Since the tragic wreck one week ago today, the lives of two families have forever been changed. Sadly, Vinemont’s Whitney Cotton was laid to rest this week in her hometown of Winfield. The other vibrant, 17-year-old Vinemont High School student Anna Hughes is a patient of Huntsville Hospital where she is challenged each and every day with the task of adapting to life and fighting her injuries sustained in the incident.

The community has asked throughout this week how Hughes is faring following her extensive injuries from the wreck which broke four vertebrae in her back. Earlier this week, she was able to lift both of her arms although she still has numbness in her hands. Doctors planned to remove her from the ventilator today but were unable to. They intend to try again in a few days.

There is still no definitive word on her legs though.

While Hughes has medical insurance, the plan does not cover the costly rehabilitation that is going be necessary as she adjusts to her new life. This is where the people of Cullman are called upon to extend their arms to the embrace her family.

Today, students and friends from Vinemont High School are holding a benefit car wash at McGriff Tire located at 209 2nd Avenue NW in Cullman on Hwy 31 across from Auto Zone.

The car wash is free but donations are greatly welcomed and will go directly toward the expenses that are being incurred as Hughes begins her long road to recovery. Promising to be there until the last car is washed, Hughes’ friends are also selling car decals and taking orders for t-shirts which ask for the community’s continued prayers for their beloved Anna.

Those unable to make it to the car wash can make a donation at any Premier Bank location in Cullman or on the fundraising page at https://www.gofundme.com/2bnwfdg.

T-shirts can be ordered at McGriff Tire during the car wash today or at Tangles Salon located on Hwy 31 just north of Hwy 157 on the northbound side.

Prayers and well wishes can be given anywhere at any time.
