CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Extension Office announced an exciting new set of educational courses for Cullman County’s 4-H program in 2024. Three new Adventure Classes will introduce children and teens aged 9-18 to hiking, kayaking and camping.

“The goal of this new club is to introduce youth to the outdoor adventures of hiking, kayaking and camping, encouraging them to explore the natural wonders of Alabama,” said Cullman County Extension Office Coordinator Kira Sims. “We also hope the kids will meet new friends that share a similar interest in the outdoors. We welcome youth with any level of experience to join in.”

Each Adventure Class focuses on a different outdoor activity, beginning with hiking from January to April 2024; kayaking from May to August and camping from September to December. Each class will meet monthly for four months. In odd months, courses will meet for instructional lessons on the second Monday, and in even months, they will meet on the second Saturday for a coordinating outdoor adventure. All outdoor excursions will be in or near Cullman County and snacks/water will be provided.

Each four-month long class carries a $15 fee, or participants are welcome to register for all three courses for the equivalent fee of $45. Snacks, activity costs and most of the necessary supplies are covered with fees paid; however, hiking equipment will need to be provided by the participants; guidance will be given during the first club meeting as to what type of hiking gear is needed. All kayaking equipment will be provided by 4-H and the paddling excursions will be led by certified 4-H leaders. Most camping equipment will be provided by 4-H, but campers with access to sleeping bags, tents, or other camping gear are encouraged to bring their own.

“The skills the youth learn can be passed on to their families to help them venture outdoors together,” Sims said, “and include life skills they will use down the road.”

Registration for Adventure Classes is open now, and each course has limited availability. To register or learn more about 4-H or its Adventure Classes, contact Kira Sims at kira.sims@auburn.edu.
