Lady Eagles win Seventh Consecutive Area Championship
COLD SPRINGS - With a solid first quarter performance, the Lady Eagles rolled to their seventh consecutive area championship, taking down Sumiton Christian 80-39 in front of a packed house Monday night at Jesse George Gymnasium.
Cold Springs coach Tammy West had to be pleased with the early spark from her daughter, Hayden West, as the sophomore flipped in seven of the Lady Eagles' first 10 points after the game was two minutes old.
That set the tone with four treys being converted and getting hot from the line with seven of seven in the first to take a 25-10 lead. Cold Springs went on a 15-4 run in the last 5:00 to break the battle open after the opponent from Walker County had closed to 10-6.
It was time for Abby Myrex to take over. The senior point guard had 10 second period points, scoring twice from downtown and four of four at the line with Cold Springs well in front by the score of 51-28 at intermission.
In the second half, coach West put a team of the future on the floor as her daughter, along with Haley Freeman, Chloe and Hanna Harbison, Courtney Attaway, Caitlyn Hall, Daultry Willoughby and Karlee Perdue worked together.
They accounted for 20 of the team's 29 points in the second half. Attaway wound up in double digits with 13 points, hitting three treys and two jumpers. Hall delivered four field goals for nine points, Chloe Harbison collected 12 on the evening, making five field goals.
Myrex, in her next to last game on the Cold Springs campus, knocked down four long rangers and was four of five from the line for 21 points.
West finished with seven and was 100 percent from the line, nailing down five of five opportunities. Chloe Harbison tossed in 12, Hall and KaKa Crider had nine, Hanna Harbison three and Freeman, Willoughby and Perdue two apiece.
Sumiton Christian dropped to 13-13 on the season with Kendall Hamm leading the Lady Eagles with 11 points and Cadi Oliver scoring eight.
Cold Springs will look to make another appearance to the Northwest Regionals next week at Wallace State if they can defeat Sulligent in the Sub-Regional game Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Jesse George Gym. They are now 18-11 on the season.
