Blake's Guide to a Merry Christmas

Last January, as I pondered my perceived need for my very own holiday rehab, I decided that Christmas 2011 would be the best yet. I purposed to enjoy it, be in the Christmas spirit from the day after Thanksgiving until midnight on December 25th and smile a lot.
Givers vs Takers, not just a seasonal issue

This time of year it isn't unusual to hear that it is better to give than to receive. Unfortunately, a number in our country have forgotten such a simple truth. If one wonders why our country is hopelessly divided, imprisoned by debt and surrounded by crime they need to look no farther than people that want to take without giving.
Running for a Reason

My entire body is literally wrought with pain. Breathing hurts. Lying in bed is painful. Moving about borders on excruciating. The reasons I find myself in this state starts about 4 years ago with a video I watched about a man named Dick Hoyt.
Dick has a son named Rick that was born in 1962 with severe cerebral palsy and as such, can't speak or even move without assistance. So severe was his CP that physicians told the Hoyts to simply institutionalize Rick and forget about him. Fortunately the Hoyts weren't interested in that option.
Losing Control

My very best childhood friend, we will call him Dave...primarily because that's his name, was the kind of friend that you never get tired of being with. We spent countless hours together from when his family moved just two doors from my family in 5th grade until we were 23 years old. We were inseparable and in fact, we went to the same university, pledged the same fraternity and eventually enlisted in the U.S. Army together. After completing Basic Training and Combat Medic School together we served in the same unit until...
A Recipe for Holiday Family Time

No Good News

The news lately seems to reveal increasingly disturbing information. In Missouri, Baby Lisa is missing and her mother was too drunk the night she "disappeared" to know anything that may have happened to the child. Jerry Sandusky has been accused of molesting, fondling and raping numerous children. Sky Metalwala, a 2 year old boy from Washington, has been missing for 9 days and even though there have been hundreds of tips, the authorities have no suspect and no clear cut direction in which to search.
Joe Pa a No Go

The breaking scandal surrounding the Penn State University Athletic Department is shocking and literally nauseating. For those of you who haven't followed it closely, Jerry Sandusky served as the defensive coordinator of the football team at Penn State for 32 years. It is now coming to light that he allegedly sexually assaulted as many as 40 children.
Read, Research then React

So many times in life our ventures begin with noble foundations and honorable intentions only to later be swayed by circumstances and morphed by the tyranny of the urgent. The places we end up, if we succumb to the temptations to be or do otherwise than we first sought to be or do, are rarely positive and are almost always prohibitive to our original goals.
Over-occupied

Do you remember when a woman at a TEA Party rally in Cleveland was raped? Can you recall the man at a TEA Party rally in Seattle who exposed himself to children? Who can forget the TEA Party protester defecating on a police car? It's no wonder that Nancy Pelosi was reduced literally to tears as she claimed the violent, racist Tea Party rallies reminded her of violent protests in her younger days. The mainstream media provided story after story of the gray-haired, veterans and middle class families that were sure to have as their foundational principles hate, racism and evil in general.
Past to Present

As a lover of history I often think about the past and the ways in which the past influences the people we are today. In honor of Oktoberfest I feel compelled to write about something German.
From Where I Stand

Perspective is paramount to our lives. Perspective causes us to vote like we vote, work the jobs we work and even worship God in the ways in which we worship...or choose not to worship at all. Our personal experiences lead us all to different places with differing perspectives.
Taking Responsibility

Falling in Fall

Fall is a paradox of a season. The beginning of a new school year and renewing old friendships juxtaposed with the end of the warm season and the hibernation of our colorful surroundings.
