Karma in Cullman hosting back-to-school event for in-need families Saturday

CULLMAN - Local nonprofit Karma in Cullman is hosting an event Saturday to assist families with back-to-school needs. Karma, implementing what it calls a “pay it forward” clause, is asking participants to donate blood to LifeSouth. In return, eligible families can pick up backpacks, school supplies, five outfits, shoes and accessories for each child. Those ineligible to donate blood are asked to bring someone who can donate on their behalf.

LifeSouth will begin accepting blood donations at 9 a.m. Saturday morning at Karma in Cullman, located at 785 Alabama Highway 157 (near the 157/Alabama Highway 69 intersection). Families will be able to choose clothes and school supplies from 10-5.

Rachel Bryant founded Karma in Cullman in 2013 after recognizing the need for family assistance through her own personal struggles. In addition to the school supplies and clothing, Karma helps with household items, furniture, toys and food.

The organization partnered with LifeSouth for this event last year and Bryant reported, “An estimated 100 lives were saved through the blood drive efforts. We always believe in paying it forward.”

Karma in Cullman can always use donations of furniture, gently used toys, clothes and other items, Currently, the greatest needs are shoes, non-perishable food items and volunteers.

Also needed are composition notebooks, one subject notebooks and dry erase markers. Karma accepts donations Monday-Friday from 10-4 but will also accept these donations during the event.
