HOLLY POND - The Holly Pond Broncos hosted the Saint Bernard Saints Monday afternoon in a matchup that saw the green and white run away with an 11-0 victory in five innings. Jacob Ring went the distance on the hill for Holly Pond, throwing five shutout innings, giving up just two hits and striking out 13. Ring’s head coach Jay Huddleston was proud to see him excel in an unconventional role.

“Jacob is not a pitcher, but he did pitch very well tonight,” Huddleston said. “I was very impressed with Jacob.”

The Broncos’ scoring started in the first when Thomas Bell brought in Alex Corneglio on a fielder’s choice. The Broncos added two more runs in the second, but the runs really began to pile up in the third. Ring scored from third on a double steal to send the Broncos up 4-0 and Ben Heatherly followed him home on a wild pitch just a few pitches later. Landon Taylor stretched the Bronco lead to 6-0 on a fielder’s choice RBI that scored Dayden Floyd. Holly Pond played another run on a wild pitch to take a 7-0 lead into the fourth.

After the Broncos scored again in the fourth on a wild pitch and a passed ball, Corneglio ended the game in the bottom of the fifth on a two-RBI single into left that capped off the 11-0 performance. Corneglio led the way for Holly Pond offensively, going 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Whether it was by walk or hit, every Bronco in the lineup reached base in the win.

Huddleston was happy to see his team get the win and hopes to build some momentum as the season moves forward.

“Any win is big; any win is big,” Huddleston said. “In our past we’ve needed to win games, and this is one that’s really going to help us, especially going into the county tournament.”

The Broncos will look to stay on the winning path when they hit the field on March 7 for round one of the Cullman County Baseball Tournament at Hanceville High School.
