WEST POINT CHRISTMAS TOURNAMENT: Day 2 recap

West Point's Rylan Jones (5) / Nick Griffin

WEST POINT - Day two of the West Point Christmas Tournament started off with a bang and set the tone for the rest of the day.

Good Hope 64, Priceville 54

Good Hope came out with a purpose to open day two of the West Point Christmas Tournament. The Raiders opened up a 14-8 lead in the first, a lead they never lost.

In the second, the Raiders took advantage of myriad mistakes made by the Bulldogs in the quarter, turning the mistakes into points and taking a 34-24 lead to the half.

Priceville put up good numbers in the third to cut the Raider lead to just five, but Good Hope put the game away in the fourth with great free-throw shooting down the stretch, taking the game 64-54.

Good Hope’s red-hot Cole Maddox got 35 points, followed by Noah Fendley with 11 and Isaac McDonald with six.

Bulldog Tyon Jones led his team with 15, while McClain Thompson got 11, Brandon Speegle nine and Seth Hood six.

Danville 48, Cold Springs 36

The first quarter was played close as was much of the second but a smothering press by Danville led to turnovers and points for the Hawks and put Cold Springs on its heels. Danville finished the second on a 6-0 run to end the half up 27-21.

The teams matched each other shot-for-shot in the third with Danville eking out two more points than Cold Springs to take a 37-29 lead to the fourth.

The Eagles scratched and clawed in the fourth quarter, getting as close as five. However, the necessity to foul put the Hawks on the line where they hit their shots and put the game away. The Hawks took the game 48-36.

Danville was paced by Adston Compton with 16, followed by Wren Cole, Garrett Robinson and Cameron Orr with seven apiece.

The Eagles’ Hunter McClendon got 11, with Micah Calvert contributing six.

Meek 70, West Point 51

It was all West Point to start the contest against Meek. The Warriors opened the game with a 10-0 run to put the Tigers in a hole early and lead to a 16-6 lead at the end of one.

West Point pushed the advantage in the second, looking to put Meek away but the Tigers kept pace and went into the locker room at the half down by just nine.

Despite West Point starting the third with a pair of free throws due to a technical foul on the Meek coach at the half, the Tigers roared back. They took over in the third and took a 47-44 lead heading to the fourth.

Meek continued to pour it on in the fourth, the Tigers hitting their open shots and putting the game out of reach for the Warriors. Meek took down West Point ,70-51.

Meek’s Caleb Aaron got 15, followed by Payton Key with 11, John Mark Abercrombie with 10, Kevin Chino and Jacob Woodard with nine and Luke Sherer with eight.

Kolton Sapp led the Warriors with 22. Austin Dubberly got 13 and Whitt Laney had eight.
