AUBURN - The Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) state swim meet took place at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center on the campus of Auburn University Dec. 1-2. The Cullman High School team had several athletes competing, and both the boys and girls placed in the top 20 in Class 6A-7A.

“CHS was strongly represented at the AHSAA state swim and dive competition this weekend.  Competing in the tough 6A-7A division,” said head coach Cory Goble. “Both teams were able to bring home a top 20 overall team finish among nearly 300 total participants from across the state; the guys finished 15th overall (fourth among 6A schools) and the girls were 17th (fifth among 6A schools).”

In diving, Reese McNeel placed eighth, followed by Kelly Warren in 10th and Reagan Martin in 13th.

In preliminaries on Friday, strong relay swims from eight qualifying swimmers earned them spots in the finals Saturday.  In addition, Colby Hutson and Cabri Adams progressed to finals individually, said Goble.

In the finals, the Lady Bearcats’ 200-medley relay team of Adams (freshman), Claire Ogstad (freshman), McNeel (freshman) and Warren (sophomore) finished 11th overall.

The Bearcats’ team of CJ Arnold (eighth grade), Colby Hutson (senior), Jonah Hilb (freshman) and Adam Cooner (freshman) finished 12th in their 200-medley relay.

In the 200-free relay, the CHS girls finished 15th, and the guys finished 16th in their division.

Individually, Hutson took fifth place in the men's 100-meter butterfly and a 13th-place overall finish in the 100-breaststroke, in which he set a personal record of 1:04.64.

Adams took the 14th-place finish in the girls’ 100-meter backstroke.

"Participation in this meet represented the hard work these athletes have put into this season," said Goble.  "We had a great time and a great experience for such a young team."
