Cullman council awards airport security fence contract, approves multiple annexations

CULLMAN - Despite the wind and rain, the Cullman City Council held its regular meeting Monday evening.  The council awarded a $184,408.50 contract to Columbus Fence Co. to construct a security fence at the Cullman Regional Airport.  The City will pay 25 percent of that, around $46,100.  The County will pick up another 25 percent, and the state will pay the other 50 percent.

The council also approved the annexation of six properties into the city limits:

  • Haley’s Cove Subdivision lots 1-7, located on County Road 1408 and 1409
  • 110 U.S. Highway 278 East owned by Dr. Burton Maxfield as B-2 Business District
  • Lot 16 of Stonebridge Subdivision, 395 County Road 1317, owned by John and Meredith Easterwood
  • Lot 14 of Misty Acres Subdivision, 351 County Road 1300, owned by Dawn Dupree
  • 1500 Catoma Lane NE, owned by Jonathan Bentley
  • A vacant lot located on Catoma Lane Northeast, owned by Doug and Kay Whaley

All properties are located in areas where road conditions and/or lack of access to adequate water lines could make firefighting difficult.  For that reason, all properties were annexed with the understanding that they would be subject to limited City services.

For properties to be annexed into the city, the property must touch a property already within the city limits, and the property owner must request annexation.

County Fair Parade gets go-ahead

With only a few days to go before the event, Mark Aderhold of the Cullman Lions Club received approval for a special event permit to hold the 2017 Cullman County Fair Parade this Saturday, Sept. 16.

In a move that delighted council members, CDG Engineers and Associates recommended that the contract cost of improving the sewer lift station at the waste water treatment plant could be reduced from $897,410 to $843,974, a savings of more than $53,000.  The council enthusiastically approved.

The council usually meets on the second and fourth Monday of each month, but has rescheduled its next meeting.  That meeting will take place at noon on Friday, Sept. 29.  According to General Government Committee Chairperson, Council President Pro Tem Jenny Folsom, the City’s new budget will be ready for distribution at that meeting.  The public is invited to attend.
