Local anglers win big at Bassmaster High School Southern Open

DAYTON, Tenn. - With a record number of 416 boats, the Bassmaster High School Southern Open was held over the weekend, with local prep anglers making a big impact.

Colton Williams and Chase Taylor of Good Hope earned a second-place finish with a total of 22 pounds, 11 ounces of live bass from the Blue Water Resort.

The Raider tandem got past a county rival up in the Volunteer State. Houston Calvert and Chase Abbott of Cold Springs were third with 20 pounds, 14 ounces.

Justin Lowery and James Cobb of Cullman kept it close, too, with 20 pounds, 7 ounces for fourth overall.

Hagen Speegle and Landen Graham of Good Hope earned 23rd place with 15 pounds, 2 ounces while Josh Spurger of Cold Springs was 28th with 14 pounds, 1 ounce and Brody Montgomery and Conner Handley in Vinemont, 45th, by collecting 12 pounds, 3 ounces of live bass.

Williams and Taylor, Calvert and Abbott, Speegle and Graham, Lowery and Cobbs and Spurger qualified for the Bassmaster National Championship on Kentucky Lake in Paris, Tennessee June 22-24.

Before that, this group of anglers will look to the BASS championships on Wheeler Lake May 13 and the BASS state event June 9-10 in Lake Eufaula.
