Fairview, Cold Springs, Holly Pond victors in day 1 of JV county softball tournament

GOOD HOPE - With the varsity division of the Cullman County Softball Tournament now in the record books, the junior varsity stepped on center stage Wednesday at Good Hope High School with one-sided domination and a pair of close encounters.

No upsets took place in the quarter-final round. But in the finale, the game had an extra inning and plenty of drama.

Fairview 16, Hanceville 6 (Game 1)

No. 4 seed Fairview scored eight runs when they batted in the first.  The Lady Aggies added four in the second and third innings to stay in command and move on to the semi-final round Thursday.

Madison Robertson drove in three runs and had a single, Callie Humphries and Caitlyn Benson singled and drove in two runs, Claudia Landers singled in a run, Kylee Aleman produced two RBIs and Abby Duke, Devon Fulmer, Sydney Hall and Olivia Overton each got a single. Callie Hicks hit three singles.

Overton was the winning pitcher for Fairview, allowing no hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

Cold Springs 4, Vinemont 1 (Game 2)

No. 2 seed Cold Springs put a run on the scoreboard in the first, went up 2-0 after the second and was ahead 4-0 following the third.

Pitcher Emma Black was working on a shutout until Vinemont produced a run in the fourth.

Black retired Vinemont with no trouble in the fifth to get her team closer to playing for the county title.

Black allowed one run on four hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Black had two singles, leading the team at the plate.

Morgan Chasteen doubled home a run, Toni West singled and had a run batted in, with Reba McCarnes hitting a single. Heidi Nichols and Haley Williams drove in runs on ground outs.

Riley Perkins, Liv Johnson and Madelyn Oden singled for Vinemont. Gracie Kennedy added a double.  Kortnee Chaffin was charged with the loss.

Holly Pond 6, Good Hope 3 (Game 3)

Sixth seed Good Hope was looking to upset No. 3 seed Holly Pond and had it in the making, leading 1-0 heading to the fourth and time on the verge of running out. The JV is playing a 75-minute time limit in the quarterfinals and semifinals.

Holly Pond pushed across in its half of the fourth and lead 3-1. But Good Hope scored twice on a double and an error with the game going to an extra inning, tied 3-3.

The Lady Broncos had two hits and took advantage of three Good Hope errors in the fifth, jumping back in front, 6-3.

Emma Ray singled in the go-ahead run in the fifth with another run scoring on an error in the outfield and Ray coming home when the throw to get her at third base sailed out of play.

Kallien Anne Perkins tripled and scored a run for the Lady Broncos, with Aubrey Armstrong collecting a single and a run scored and Taylor Simmons a double. Ray came in relief and was credited with the victory.

Good Hope' had Abby Hunt drive in a run with a single and Kaylee Shikle doubled home two runs in the bottom of the fourth. Amber Sterling was charged with the loss.

West Point vs. Fairview 4:30 p.m.
Championship 6 p.m.
