Saint Bernard Prep offers driving school to students

Abigail Curtis, of Cullman, is taking advantage of driving school offered at Saint Bernard Prep.

CULLMAN - Saint Bernard Prep School is offering REO Driving School to students wishing to obtain their driving permits and driver’s licenses from the state of Alabama.

About 30 students are taking part in the 30-hour classroom instruction course. Students obtaining a permit through the course and being allowed to drive with a certified teacher, offers parents not only an opportunity to make sure their child understands the importance of safe defensive driving, but also a better price on auto insurance if their child is in good academic standing at the school.

The private instructional course offers international students added benefits, allowing them to obtain a driver’s license before entering college in the United States.

Ed Oaks of REO Driving School offered his services to Saint Bernard at the request of President, Father Joel Martin. Oaks, a retired driver’s education teacher from West Point High School, instructs students at Saint Bernard on Sunday afternoons. Drive time is permitted on Saturdays or on an individual basis.

Cost for the course is $240 and includes materials and driving time.

Oaks said if someone had told him 40 years ago that he would be teaching Koreans how to drive, he wouldn’t have believed them. “I am enjoying working with them.  They are a great group of students.”
