Letter to the editor: East Elementary students create Little Free Library

EES

Good morning!

I have a HUGE project that needs publicity within our Cullman community. I am the librarian at East Elementary and I have a group of advanced sixth graders who have just completed a project-based learning unit where they researched “summer slide” and the benefits of summer reading.

These students have installed a Little Free Library on the front lawn of our school. They have created fliers to pass out to our community promoting the Little Free Library. They also created a commercial to show to our student body and posters to hang in our hallways. This was all done to promote summer reading to our school and community. I AM SO PROUD OF THEM!

The Little Free Library works on the honor system...Take a Book, Leave a Book. It is open all day, every day; the top shelf we have designated for adult/teen books and the bottom shelf for kids’ books. There is even a sign-in sheet to see who visits the library. You may take any book you like, as long as you leave a book in its place.

I have attached some pictures of our Little Free Library. This is a nationwide movement through www.littlefreelibrary.org and the students have already purchased a plaque giving their Little Free Library a number, and have registered their library, which places it on the National Map of All Little Free Libraries.

These students really want to get the word out to the community and promote their Little Free Library. We are having our own little ribbon cutting on April 20, where the community and school are invited.  I hope that you find this story as intriguing and encouraging as we do! These students have worked hard!
