CULLMAN - Students, along with school system employees, were recognized at Thursday night’s Cullman County School Board meeting.

West Point High School’s Scholar’s Bowl team was recognized for winning first place at the Alabama Scholastic Competition Association district tournament. West Point went undefeated in Pool A of the tournament, giving them first place. Good Hope secured third. West Point also broke the ASCA record for the most points scored in a single game, with 660 points in the third round. In Pool B Fairview came in second.

Cullman County Schools’ Transportation Program was recognized for attaining the goal of Excellence in school bus safety during inspections in 2016; this was done by having less than 10 percent major deficiencies in the school bus fleet.   Specifically recognized were Robert Burgess, Mickey Gay, Jackie Mead, Doug Millwood, Chad Spradlin and Ryan Waters.

Also recognized were the Cullman County Schools’ nominees for the Alabama State Teacher of the Year; for the elementary category, Jennifer Wright was selected, and for the secondary category, Jena Mayo was nominated for the second year in a row.

Lastly, several students from Welti Elementary School were on hand, as their school was recognized for being a member of the State Champion Schools of Alabama for having the largest percentage of students who qualified for the Governor’s Physical Fitness Award. Welti was one of only six schools in the state recognized; of which, only two were elementary schools.

In other business, the CCBOE approved the purchase of land adjacent to Vinemont High School from the Cullman Masonic Lodge, funded by a half-cent sales tax on capital funds. The land is located between Vinemont Middle and High Schools, and will be used to address future growth and overcrowding issues. The purchase was approved unanimously.

The CCBOE then made revisions to three board policies. Policies 6.1.2 Admission to Schools, 6.8 Equal Educational Opportunities, and 3.8 Purchasing were amended. A revision to Policy 5.6 Employee Conflicts of Interest was considered; however, the vote did not signify any change in said policy.

6.1.2 section c involves homeless students; added to the policy was, “the enrollment of homeless, migratory, immigrant, neglected and/or delinquent and limited English proficient shall not be denied or delayed due to lack of proper documents.”

Also added to 6.1.2 was a new section, g. “Title IV- An SEA must collaborate with the state agency responsible for administrating State plans under parts B and E of Title IV of the Social Security Act to ensure the educational stability of children in foster care…”

Policy 6.8 was amended to include that the CCBOE will provide equal access to the Boy Scouts and other designated youth groups.

The Title IX Coordinator and the 504 Coordinator for the Cullman County Schools have been designated to handle inquiries regarding the non-discrimination policies.

Policy 3.8 was amended to include 3.8.1 which states that, “the board will follow state laws for the procurement with an approved purchase order system that will include such requirements and procedures as may be established in the Board Finance Manual.”

In contract and salary changes, all requests made were approved, including the hiring of Becki Klein as a purchasing agent.

One public works project was approved. Good Hope High School will soon have repairs made to the baseball concession stand/press box for the projected cost of $11,150. Yearwood Construction was awarded the contract.
