Lady Saints take 3rd, Lady Eagles 4th in state 1A/2A cross country championships

St. Bernard’s Mami finishes 2nd

OAKVILLE - Local runners Leahrose Mami of St. Bernard, Camilla Chambers of Holly Pond and Alex McDonald from Fairview made a lasting impression Saturday during the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) Cross Country championships.

Mami, one of the top in her class all season, finished second in the 1A/2A meet to Hannah Tarwater of Whitesburg Christian. The junior for the Lady Saints finished at 19:24, six seconds behind Tarwater's winning time of 19:18.

Chambers, just an eighth grader for Holly Pond, enjoyed her personal best with a time of 20:00 in the 3A division; that got her fifth overall and on the All-State team.

McDonald closed out the season for the Lady Aggies with her best time of 20:52. The junior was 21st in Class 5A while a friend of McDonald's, Taylor Willingham of West Point, was 73rd at 23:16.

Looking to take home a third consecutive state championship, St. Bernard was knocked out of receiving the hardware with a third-place finish. Westminster Oak Mountain ended their run by scoring 42 points to earn the top spot.

Hatton High School took second place by the difference of a point. The Lady Hornets had 88 to 89 for the Lady Saints.

Cold Springs was fourth in 1A/2A with 95 points.

Finishing behind Mami's second place effort for the Lady Saints were Ivy Edge sixth at 20:04, Katelyn Cowie 24th at 21:58, Lizbeth Medina 31st at 22:17 and Claire Sanders 36th at 22:31.

Sadie Terry, a freshman for Cold Springs, took home 15th at 21:22. Eighth graders Brooke Crider and Ava Akridge were 17th and 18th in the field. Crider's time was 21:27, Akridge 21:46.

Ashleigh White finished 29th for the Lady Eagles at 22:15, Alyssa Jackson 30th with a time of 22:17.

Mami, Edge and Terry earned All-State honors for finishing among the Top 15 in their respective classes.

Rachael Collins from Cullman was 29th in the 6A meet with a time of 21:12. The Lady Bearcats finished ninth in the event.
