Community Flocks to Food Trucks

CULLMAN – Cullman Parks & Recreation has brought us a brand new way to eat lunch. It’s called ‘Eat on the Street’, and it’s the perfect way to get outside on your lunch break. Food trucks have come to serve Cullman and will be here every Tuesday and Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Cullman Farmer’s Market.

Last Thursday Cantina’s was serving up tacos at Eat on the Street. This taco truck is based in Birmingham, and even with the burst of cold weather, they still gathered quite the crowd.

Julie, an employee of Cantina’s, was pleased with serving Cullman.

“It’s going really well,” she said as she busily made and served food. “We’ve really enjoyed it so far and we’ve had a lot of customers!”

Cantina’s serves tacos including asada, chicken, Cuban, veggie, fish, black bean and a club taco. They also offer garlic fries, garlic cheese fries, a Cuban sandwich and a variety of drinks.

Eat on the Street is a program provided by Cullman Parks & Recreation. Waid Harbison, marketing director of CP&R stated that the program was created to bring people to the Farmer’s Market.

“We’re trying to get people to come out and eat and then hopefully shop and walk through the Farmer’s Market to see what all the local farmers have,” said Harbison. “We’re really trying to support the local farmers.”

Because the Farmer’s Market is only open during work hours, it’s hard for working people to have the chance to visit it. Harbison believes Eat on the Street can change this.

“We’re also trying to do something for the people working who don’t have access to the Farmer’s Market,” he stated. “So this gives them the opportunity to use their lunch break to come here and utilize the Farmer’s Market and do something a little different for lunch.”

A new food truck will be serving lunch each week.

“We’ve got trucks from Huntsville, Cullman and Birmingham, and so far it’s been a really big hit,” Harbison said. “It’s been a great program so far.”

Here’s what you can expect to see in the Festhalle for the rest of May: Shindigs on May 20, Devil Dawgs on May 22, Papa Duke’s on May 27 and Johnny’s Bar-B-Q On the Road on May 29.

Eat on the Street is the perfect way to eat lunch this summer. It’s always Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., it’s always right behind the Festhalle, and it’s always delicious.
